Privacy Policy

Last updated: March 27, 2026

Overview

The BlueLine ("we," "us," or "our") operates the website located at theblueline.live. This Privacy Policy explains what information is collected when you visit our site, how that information is used, and the choices you have regarding your data.

We are committed to protecting your privacy. The BlueLine does not require user registration, does not collect personal information such as names, email addresses, or passwords, and does not store any personally identifiable information (PII) on its servers.

Information We Collect

We do not collect personal information directly. The BlueLine has no user accounts, sign-up forms, or login features. You can use every feature of the site without providing any personal data.

However, third-party services integrated into the site may collect certain non-personal information automatically, as described below.

Third-Party Advertising

We use Google AdSense to display advertisements on our site. Google AdSense is a third-party advertising service provided by Google LLC. Google AdSense may use cookies and similar tracking technologies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this site or other websites on the internet.

Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads based on your visit to The BlueLine and/or other sites on the Internet. You may opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings.

For more information about how Google collects and uses data, please review How Google uses data when you use our partners' sites or apps.

Cookies and Tracking Technologies

The BlueLine does not set any first-party tracking or advertising cookies. We set one strictly functional cookie, which records that you have dismissed a promotional message so it is not shown to you again; it contains no identifier and is not used for analytics or advertising. Separately, the third-party services described above (Google AdSense) may place cookies on your device. Those cookies are used to:

  • Serve advertisements relevant to your interests
  • Limit the number of times you see a particular ad
  • Measure the effectiveness of advertising campaigns

You can control and manage cookies through your browser settings. Most browsers allow you to block or delete cookies. Please note that blocking cookies may affect the functionality of some features on the site.

Analytics (Umami)

We use Umami Cloud, an analytics service operated by Umami Software, Inc., to understand which pages are visited and how the site performs. Umami is loaded on every page of the site.

Umami is a cookie-free, privacy-focused analytics tool. It does not set cookies, does not use device fingerprinting, and does not collect or store personally identifiable information. It records aggregate page views, referrer, approximate country, browser, and device type. We cannot use it to identify you individually or to follow you across other websites.

Push Notifications (OneSignal)

We use OneSignal, a service provided by OneSignal, Inc., to deliver optional browser push notifications about game results and playoff-race changes for teams you choose to follow. The OneSignal SDK is loaded on every page of the site.

If, and only if, you explicitly opt in to notifications, OneSignal creates a subscription identifier for your browser or device and stores it along with your browser type, operating system, approximate location derived from IP address, and the team tags you have chosen to follow. This identifier is a device-level identifier — it is not linked to your name or email address, and we never send OneSignal any personal information about you.

You can withdraw consent at any time by revoking notification permission in your browser settings or by turning off notifications in the site interface, which removes the subscription. Until you opt in, the SDK is present on the page but no subscription identifier is created.

Local Storage

The BlueLine stores a small amount of data in your browser's local storage. This never leaves your device, is not transmitted to us, and is not used for tracking or advertising. It is used to remember:

  • Your light / dark theme preference
  • Your favourite and followed teams
  • Which release notes you have already dismissed
  • Whether you have dismissed the newsletter invitation

You can clear this at any time through your browser settings. Clearing it resets these preferences but does not otherwise affect your ability to use the site.

Data Retention

Since we do not collect personal data, there is no personal data to retain. Cached NHL data used to power the site is retained temporarily (typically 60 seconds to 5 minutes) for performance purposes and is overwritten with fresh data on each refresh cycle.

Your Rights

Even though The BlueLine does not collect personal data, you still have rights regarding any indirect data collection that may occur through third-party services like Google AdSense. Depending on your jurisdiction (notably the EU under GDPR, California under CCPA, and Canada under PIPEDA), you may have the right to:

  • Access information that has been collected about you (e.g., through your Google account if you are signed in)
  • Request the correction or deletion of personal data that third parties hold about you
  • Opt out of personalized advertising at any time
  • Withdraw consent for advertising cookies, where consent was the legal basis for processing
  • File a complaint with your local data protection authority if you believe your rights have been violated

Because we do not store personal data ourselves, requests of this nature should be directed to the third-party services that may have collected the data. Google provides comprehensive tools for managing your ad personalization, data download, and deletion at myaccount.google.com.

Security

We take reasonable steps to protect the integrity of the site, even though we do not store user data. The BlueLine is served exclusively over HTTPS, our application is hosted on managed infrastructure with industry-standard security practices, and we keep our software dependencies up to date to mitigate known vulnerabilities.

However, no internet transmission or storage system is 100% secure. While we apply best practices, we cannot guarantee absolute security against all possible threats. Because The BlueLine does not require accounts, passwords, or payment information, the privacy risk to visitors is inherently limited.

Children's Privacy

The BlueLine does not knowingly collect information from children under 13 years of age. The site is a general-audience hockey statistics tracker and does not require any personal information to use.

Links to Other Sites

Our site may contain links to external websites (such as the NHL API documentation or Google policies). We are not responsible for the privacy practices or content of these external sites. We encourage you to review the privacy policies of any third-party sites you visit.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date. We encourage you to review this page periodically for any changes.

Contact Us

If you have questions about this Privacy Policy or the data practices of The BlueLine, you can reach us through the site. As a free, independent project, we are committed to transparency in how we handle information.
